Item G1: 1 COULTER PINE TREE
This package contains 1 coulter pine (Pinus coulteri) tree. The buyer will receive a tree that is similar to the one that is pictured. These trees are 33 to 40 inches tall and the trunk diameter is 7/16 to 11/16 inch. The Coulter pine or big-cone pine (Pinus coulteri) is a native of the coastal mountains of southern California and northern Baja California. Isolated groves are found as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area in Mt. Diablo State Park and Mount Hamilton. The species is named after Thomas Coulter, an Irish botanist and physician. The coulter pine grows moderately fast to 30 to 80 feet tall and 20 to 40 feet wide, with shapely, open growth and wide spreading, persistent lower branches. It is occasionally planted as an ornamental tree in parks and large gardens. Coulter pines produce the largest cones of any pine tree species (people are actually advised to wear hardhats when working in Coulter pine groves). The large size of the cones, oval and 10 to 14 inches long, has earned them the nickname "widowmakers" among locals. This pine is recommended in zones 3-10, 14-23 and H1.
